Description:
An exploration of the impact of the Renaissance ('rebirth' of classical learning) and the Reformation (division of the Western Church into the Roman Catholic and Protestant faiths) upon 15th- and 16th-century Europe. Influential writers and leaders are placed within such contexts as: the experiences of the majority of the population; regional diversity; European global exploration and imperialism; the trials for religious heresy and witchcraft; and such socially constructed categories of difference as gender, class and race and sexuality.

A study of French foreign policy over a century. This seminar course examines the major issues that confronted this major European power in an increasingly difficult international environment and the way it attempted to respond. Among the themes addressed: France's quest for power before 1914; France in the two world wars; its search for security in the interwar period; the influence of imperialism on French global diplomacy; France's effort to recover a great power status after 1945; De Gaulle's foreign policy.

A seminar course that will examine various seminal topics in post-1939 Canada, including such things as the effect of the Second World War on the development of Canada, French-English and Canadian-American relations, Aboriginal issues, the establishment of the welfare state and the assertion of Canada's international presence. This course will allow the student to gain a better understanding of how modern Canada has developed, and why it followed the course it did.
